The Hawks were eager to move Johnson, despite his talent, because of the money remaining on the six-year, max contract he signed with the Hawks back in 2010. Atlanta offered him the deal in order to keep him from reuniting Mike D’Antoni and Amar’e Stoudemire, who he played for and with in Phoenix, with the Knicks. Johnson is owed roughly $90 million over the next four years.
While the deal was made without any contingencies in regards to Williams’ future, one would expect that the Nets would have sought his input and approval on any possible moves they might make in the opening days of free agency to help convince the superstar point guard that it is in his best interest to remain with the franchise that traded for him last February.
