The pilot opens with a crabby McAvoy having a spectacular meltdown in front of an audience of Northwestern students and sneering that “America isn’t the greatest country in the world,” sending the audience and the network suits into a tizzy. While he is sent away to St. Lucia for some rest and recuperation, his boss, Charlie Skinner (Sam Waterston), hires a new producer to overhaul the evening news broadcast — and McAvoy himself. The Jay Leno of news anchors returns to find his old staff gone — he’s affable on air, but insufferable offscreen — and that his new producer is his old girlfriend, Mackenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer).
