Cunning prisoners at a jail in southeast Australia removed bricks from the walls of their cell in a bid to carve a "Shawshank Redemption"-style escape route -- only to be caught just in time by alert prison guards.
The bricks had been removed, re-set with fake mortar and re-painted by prisoners at the Grafton Correctional Center, some 381 miles northeast of Sydney, public broadcaster the ABC reported Thursday.
The inmates were reportedly close to staging a mass breakout when guards making a routine check discovered the phony bricks.
